Homemade white bread has an earthy taste and wonderful texture. And the freshness and aroma doesn't come close to commercially produced bread. We have busy lives these days and don't make time to go through the trouble of baking bread. I love baking so I do make the time and it's satisfying to see my family happy and well fed!
INGREDIENTS (MAKES 2 LOAVES)
5 1/2 (Five and a Half) Cups Plain Flour
3 Teaspoons Instant Yeast
1 Cup (250 mL) Warm Milk
1 Cup Warm Water
2 Tbsp (30 mL) Melted Butter or Margarine
2 Tbsp sugar
1 1/2 tsp salt
DIRECTIONS
1) In a mixing bowl - sift the flour. Add the dry ingredients. Stir to mix well
2) Make a well in the centre and add the milk. Start adding water a little at a time while you gather the flour to the centre to start kneading. Keep adding until you get a sticky dough
3) Add the melted butter or margarine. Keep kneading until the sticky dough becomes non-stick and leaves the sides of the bowl clean.
4) Shape into a ball, pat around with oil/butter - cover and set aside to rise
5) After dough has risen, punch it down and divide into 2 equal parts. Shape into rolls and drop into lightly greased bread pans. Cover again and set aside to rise. Pre-heat oven to 200C.
6) Once dough has risen to slightly above the bread pan, place the loaves in the oven for 25 - 30 minutes. Turn out onto rack for cooling before slicing the bread. Brush some milk with a little butter melted in over bread as soon as out of oven if you want a soft crust.
